The aptly named Alice Coote, Hansel in the Met’s current production of Hansel and Gretel, was guest quiz master on yesterday’s Opera Quiz. She felt compelled to answer a question she had put to the other participants, namely what current topic would make a good opera. Her answer to her own question was a silly slur on the current administration. It would seem that there’s no respite from politics even on the Saturday afternoon broadcasts from the Met. One good thing did come out of mezzo-soprano Coote’s remark. She has single handedly refuted one of opera’s most hoary maxims. The higher the voice the smaller the brain.
