The following recordings LIVE (he's always much better live than in studio) show also DS at his best:
Werther, Mexico, 52, Alfredo, Mexico, 52, Riccardo, Scala, 56, Edgardo, Berlin, 55, Almaviva, Met, 50, Turridu, Scala, 55, his very funny Nemorino, Edimbourg, 57. ALL SPLENDID vocally and dramatically!
Unfortunately, his unhealthy singing specially in the 50's (too generous and with maximum intensity, listen to Forza 55 with Tebaldi, for instance), no protection, unwise choice of repertory, exhausting way of life and I dare to say, his devil-may-care attitude , ended his career too early and it's a pity.
Beside him, most of the others (except Caruso) sound like "a machine singing notes" (his characters are so genuine, never a caricature, even in the very demanding roles). By far the most interesting and my favorite.
And his tenor voice is also the most glorious, attractive I ever heard.

To me DI STEFANO was and always will be THE TENOR !I heard him in excellence and at the Callas Farewell. The greatest surprise was to hear him in a private concert in Hollywood in '81 in fine voice. A great artist will find the way if there is one.

I first heard GdS on disc in 1963. He became then and still is an inspration. He brought me to want to sing a credible operatic tenor, which, after many lessons and small local stage experiences, I now can do.

HeH DID HIM NO GOOD sings for you from the heart and with the most intense feeling that I have heard in any tenor. Yes he ruined his voice but on his journey to that ruin he melted hearts and brought immeasurable joy to many.

PEOPLE SAY THAT HE HAD NO TECHNIQUE BUT HE HAD SO MUCH IN FACT ALTHOUGH HE WAS CARELESS WITH HIS TRAINING AND HIS GIFTED VOICE. HE LIKED, TOO, THE NIGHT LIFE WHICH TOGETHER WITH HIS EGO WAS PART OF HIS RUIN.

I MET HIM BRIEFLY IN 1982 BUT DID NOT HEAR HIM SING THEN AS I WANTED TO REMEMBER ONLY HIS VOICE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS
