This is a repeat of last year’s observance of Placido Domingo’s birthday
To mark the 72nd anniversary of Placido Domingo’s birth (January 21, 1941), here are eleven photographs of the great artist taken by Robert Cahen. There is little to say about Domingo’s career that isn’t self evident. He’s had more roles than Parker House. He’s a tenor; he’s a baritone; he’s a conductor; he’s an administrator. He’s a phenomenon. There’s never been a career in opera approaching his.
I heard Placido in the early 60’s before he went to the Met and became famous. He was a very nice lyric tenor then. I thought he would go far in opera. With all he has done and is still doing, he must know the secret of eternal energy. I am so greatful that he revived many marvelous neglected operas.
He is a philanthropist too; he helped to raise funds performing for the victims of 1985 Mexico City earthquake (number of deaths estimated to be up to 40,000) and released an album of one of the events. As recognition to his support to Mexico City earthquake victims, a statue in his honor was unveiled.
