The noted tenor died in Catania yesterday after being in a coma for nine days. He had suffered head and chest injuries from a motor scooter accident 9 days earlier. He was 43 years old.

A true loss for all of us
As far as I am informed he was riding a Vespa motorscooter which is even more prone to accidents than a motorbike. I read that he was not wearing a crash helmet since this is not advisable to do in Sicily. The Mafia might think you are one of their enemies, want to hide your face and might shoot you.
I heard him as Cavaradossi in a Hamburg Tosca in June this year and was highly impressed. After the opera my companion and I met him at the stage door. Patiently he gave us autographs and answered questions. A very friendly man. R.I.P.
