Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska made her Met debut last month in the title role of Verdi’s Aida. She is scheduled to repeat the role in Saturday’s telecast from the Met. Though only 37, she has been singing for 16 years mostly in her native Ukraine. Last minute appearances in Berlin and London brought her to international acclaim over the past three years. Her New York appearance caused a stir. There are never many sopranos up to the demands of the heavy Verdi roles. Her voice appears to have power and warmth.

In anticipation of the upcoming telecast, here are a few clips of her singing excerpts from Macbeth and Aida.

Dec 16 – I’ve added Monastyrska’s atomic take no prisoners interpretation of Lady Macbeth’s first act. Its from this year’s Richard Tucker Gala.
