There’s always considerable risk when animals are assigned a part in a live performance. There is a great story attributed to Bruno Walter who conducted a performance of Aida at Rome’s Baths of Caracalla. The Triumphal Scene featured at least one elephant who relieved herself during the performance. When asked to comment on the incident Walter is alleged to have said that the beast wasn’t much as a performer, but as a critic she was superb.
